Xiaomin Xu

Dr. Xiaomin Xu is a Lecturer in Ground Engineering at the University of Manchester, Department of Civil Engineering and Management. He previously conducted research at the Cambridge Centre for Smart Infrastructure and Construction (CSIC) within the University of Cambridge's Department of Engineering. Dr. Xu holds a Ph.D. in Geotechnical Engineering from Zhejiang University (2012), an MSc in Geotechnical Engineering from Chongqing University (2007), and a BEng in Civil Engineering from Chongqing University (2004). His research interests include innovative sensing, structural health monitoring, smart earthworks, and multiscale numerical modelling. He has contributed to major projects such as Crossrail, HS2, and Bank Station Capacity Upgrade.

Xiaomin Xu's research focuses on micromechanics of granular materials, liquefaction, fracture mechanics, fibre optic sensing, and wireless sensor networks. Their work explores the behavior of granular soils under various loading conditions, including the correlation between liquefaction resistance and shear wave velocity. Xu also investigates the numerical simulation of rock and soil failure processes, such as the propagation of flaws in rock materials and the impact-induced failure of rock-like materials. Additionally, they contribute to the development of distributed fibre optic sensing for sinkhole early warning and the performance monitoring of structures using wireless sensor networks. Their research integrates computational methods with experimental studies to enhance the understanding of geotechnical and structural systems.
