Maria Sharmina

Maria Sharmina is Professor in Energy and Sustainability at The University of Manchester, School of Engineering, and a Co-Director at Policy@Manchester. She is Principal Investigator on the UKRI £6m BuildZero programme, focusing on sustainable buildings. Her research spans energy systems, circular economy, and climate policies, with contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. She has worked on projects related to net zero, sustainable food systems, and digital solutions. Sharmina is a member of the Strategic Advisory Team for UKRI's Digital Security & Resilience Theme and the Sustainable Robotics Committee at the British Standards Institution. She has also engaged in consultancy with organizations such as the Co-operative Group and Manchester City Council.
