Regular biography
Kun XU is a Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Mathematics at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research primarily focuses on the development of numerical algorithms for computational fluid dynamics. Over the past thirty years, he has progressively developed the gas-kinetic scheme (GKS), the unified gas-kinetic scheme (UGKS), and the unified gas-kinetic wave-particle (UGKWP) method, which are now routinely used to simulate both rarefied and continuum flows. The direct modeling framework he established has been successfully applied to multiscale transport problems in areas such as rarefied gas dynamics, radiation, neutron transport, plasma, and gas-solid particle two-phase flows. The GKS, UGKS, and UGKWP methods have also been further developed and implemented in the Aries software by Suochen Company. Currently, Prof. Xu serves as Editor-in-Chief of Advances in Aerodynamics, and as an Associate Editor for Communications in Computational Physics, International Journal of Computational Fluid Dynamics, and Computers and Fluids.

Kun Xu is a Chair Professor in the Mathematics Department at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research focuses on Computational Fluid Dynamics and Rarefied Flows, with a particular emphasis on developing and applying gas-kinetic schemes for solving complex fluid dynamics problems. His work includes the construction of unified gas-kinetic schemes that bridge continuum and rarefied flow regimes, as well as the development of numerical methods for Navier-Stokes equations and hydrodynamic simulations. Xu's research has significantly advanced the understanding of compressible and thermal flows in various regimes.
