Regular biography
Professor J Paul Attfield FRS is a Professor of Materials Science at Extreme Conditions in the Department of Chemistry at The University of Edinburgh. His research focuses on the chemistry of materials exhibiting notable physical properties, including magnetism, superconductivity, and high-pressure synthesis. He investigates how unusual conducting and magnetic properties depend on chemical composition and structure, with an emphasis on materials such as high-temperature superconducting copper oxides, transition metal oxides, and charge ordered materials. His work is part of the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions (CSEC) and involves powder X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments to determine atomic structures.
