Julia Yan

Julia Yan is an Assistant Professor in the Operations and Logistics Division at the UBC Sauder School of Business. Her research focuses on Transportation, Applied Optimization, Integer Programming, and Operations Research. She holds a BA from Princeton University and a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yan has contributed to several publications, including forthcoming work on pricing shared rides and a 2025 paper on trading flexibility for adoption in ridesharing. She teaches courses such as Application of Statistics in Management at the IMBA, PMBA, and MM levels. Her research focuses on developing advanced analytical methods to enhance decision-making in complex systems, particularly in transportation and logistics. Yan's work includes prescriptive analytics for human resource planning, joint frequency-setting and pricing optimization in multimodal transit networks, and data-driven transit network design. She also explores quantum control in nonlinear dynamics, such as optimal coherent mode transitions in Bose-Einstein condensates. Her research emphasizes scalable solutions for real-world challenges, including shared ride pricing and on-trip matching.
