Robert Kayen

Robert Kayen is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Senior Scientist at the U. S. Geological Survey (Retired). His research focuses on earthquake geotechnical engineering, Interferometric Synthetic-Aperture Radar, Terrestrial Laser Scanning-LIDAR, Structure-From-Motion geomatics, engineering geophysics, engineering geology, seismic soil liquefaction, and hazard and risk assessment. He teaches courses such as Engineering Geology and Engineering Geomatics. Kayen has collaborated extensively with UC Berkeley and other institutions, contributing to geotechnical research and the development of methodologies for seismic hazard analysis.

Robert E. Kayen is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, with research interests in Civil Geosystems Engineering and Earth Science. His work focuses on seismic soil liquefaction potential, site response complexity, and the evaluation of geotechnical methods for liquefaction assessment. Kayen has contributed extensively to understanding the behavior of soils during earthquakes, including the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and the 2002 Denali fault earthquake. His research integrates probabilistic and deterministic approaches to assess liquefaction hazards and has examined the performance of flood protection systems during natural disasters.
