Robert Harley

Robert Harley is the Carl W. Johnson Professor in Civil Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Department of Civil Engineering. His research interests include air pollution & air quality, atmospheric chemistry, motor vehicle emissions, sustainable transportation, and photochemical air quality modeling. Harley's work focuses on understanding air pollution problems through mathematical models and field experiments, with an emphasis on emission source characterization and control. His research group investigates air quality modeling, including the formation of pollutants like tropospheric ozone and PM2.5 through photochemical reactions. Harley has also developed a fuel-based approach to estimating vehicle emissions, contributing to policy-relevant revisions in emission inventories.
