Frank Werblin

Frank Werblin is a Professor Emeritus of Neurobiology and Neurophysiology at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Department of BIO. His research focuses on the neural circuitry in the retina that generates representations of the visual world. The retina extracts multiple abstractions formed at different strata and transmitted along the optic nerve. His work investigates the structural and functional components of these abstractions, including crossover inhibition, which plays a critical role in visual processing. Werblin's research also explores the integration of excitation and inhibition in retinal output, optical recording techniques, and the use of computational models to understand retinal interactions. Additionally, he investigates methods to restore visual function in blind retinas through genetic approaches.
