Thomas Cline

Thomas Cline is Professor Emeritus of Genetics at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Department of BIO. His research focused on understanding how sexual dimorphism in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, is genetically programmed and how this programming may have evolved. His work over nearly four decades centered on the master regulatory switch gene Sex-lethal (Sxl), which is central to the fruit fly sex determination system. Cline retired in 2012 and completed the closure of his lab in 2014, transferring valuable mutant fly lines to the Bloomington Stock Center. Currently, he resides in the laboratory of Professor Barbara Meyer, where he collaborates on aspects of C. elegans sex determination, chromosome structure/behavior, and evolution.
