Georjana Barnes
Regular biography
Georjana Barnes is a Professor in the Department of BIO at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on the mitotic spindle and its role in chromosome segregation, with an emphasis on identifying molecular mechanisms that ensure the fidelity of mitosis and meiosis. Using proteomics, genetics, cellular imaging, and biochemistry, her work has identified novel protein components of yeast spindles and kinetochores, and has mapped their phosphorylation sites. Her research explores the structure, function, and regulation of the yeast kinetochore and mitotic spindle, including the role of Aurora kinase in phosphorylation events and spindle dynamics.
