Ian Swinburne
Regular biography
Ian Swinburne is an Assistant Professor of Cell Biology in the Department of BIO at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the first three days of zebrafish development, investigating how tissues, cells, and subcellular dynamics coordinate to generate organs and initiate physiologies. The lab's current goal is to understand the mechanisms of hydraulic control within vertebrate organs, which is essential for functions such as hearing, balance, vision, and brain ventricle homeostasis. His work integrates quantitative cell biology, developmental biology, and physiology to study tissue-scale pressure relief valves in the ear and eye, utilizing live-imaging, CRISPR-based genetics, and biophysical measurements.
