Jörn Piel

Prof. Jörn Piel is a Professor in the Department of BIO at ETH Zurich. His research focuses on bacterial natural products, with an emphasis on understanding how bacteria synthesize structurally complex natural products and discovering metabolic novelty in unexplored microbes. His lab employs interdisciplinary approaches, integrating molecular biology, microbiology, bioinformatics, and analytical and organic chemistry to generate structural diversity and sustainable sources of rare bioactive compounds. The Piel Lab's work includes genome-based discovery, total synthesis, and the exploration of natural products from diverse microbial sources.
