Doug Koshland

Doug Koshland is a Professor of Genetics in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. His laboratory utilizes budding yeast to investigate fundamental processes in cell biology, focusing on the development of genetic reagents and cell biological methods to analyze complex processes in vivo, alongside in vitro assays to uncover molecular mechanisms. His research addresses higher-order chromosome structure, genome integrity, and the molecular functions of SMC complexes, particularly cohesin, in DNA tethering, loop extrusion, and chromosome organization. His work has contributed to understanding the biological and biochemical functions of these complexes and their roles in DNA repair, gene expression, and chromosome segregation.
