Mirko Musa

Mirko Musa is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), affiliated with the Institute of Civil Engineering. He directs the STREEM Lab (Sustainable River Engineering, Energy, and Morphodynamics), which integrates laboratory experiments, data analysis, and analytical modeling to advance water power technologies, including hydropower and hydrokinetic energy, while ensuring environmental sustainability. His research focuses on hydraulics, river mechanics, and morphodynamics. Musa earned his B.S. and M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Trento, Italy, and his Ph.D. in Civil, Environmental, and Geo-Engineering from the University of Minnesota, where his dissertation was recognized with the 2020 Best Dissertation Award in Physical Sciences and Engineering by the University of Minnesota Graduate School.

Mirko Musa is a researcher at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne with expertise in Hydraulics, Sediment Transport, Hydropower, Marine and Hydrokinetic Fluid Dynamics. His work focuses on the interaction between hydrokinetic turbines and sediment dynamics, including local scour, bedform migration, and wake interactions. He investigates the performance and resilience of hydrokinetic turbine arrays under varying flow conditions and sediment transport scenarios. Additionally, he explores the potential of non-powered dams for hydropower development and the geotechnical foundations required for low-head applications. His research also addresses the challenges of advanced manufacturing and materials for hydropower technologies.
