Andrew Sonta

Andrew Sonta is a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering (CE) at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He directs the ETHOS Lab, which focuses on using data-driven and computational tools to create interventions in the built environment that advance social and environmental sustainability goals. His research areas include human-building interaction, building energy efficiency, socio-environmental analysis of urban form, and urban energy systems. Before joining EPFL, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University's Data Science Institute. His teaching includes courses on computational systems thinking for sustainable engineering, energy and comfort in buildings, and sustainability.

His work includes creating databases for occupant behavior, designing personalized environmental control systems, and exploring the relationship between urban form and social cohesion. Sonta's research also addresses the challenges of statistical analysis in human-centric building studies and the impact of material properties on building performance.
