IELTS

TOEFL/IELTS test scores must be sent electronically from the testing center, and no institution code is required. International applicants: As of January 20, 2026: 5 minimum total score, with a 4.5 minimum Speaking and Writing section scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL ), for ( IELTS ), most recent overall band score must be at least 7 minimum overall band score. Test taken on or after January 21, 2026: 7 minimum total scores, with 6.5 minimum Speaking and Writing section scores. For Fall 2027, tests taken before June 1, 2025, will not be accepted even if your score was reported to UC Berkeley.

For graduate admission, UC Berkeley requires a minimum TOEFL score of 570 on the paper-based test, 230 on the computer-based test (CBT), or 90/120 on the internet-based test (iBT). Your MOST RECENT score must meet this minimum. Applicants whose most recent score fails to meet the minimum will not be admitted because there are no exceptions to this minimum requirement.

Restrictions and immigration

Degree: Important to note. Current MS students who wish to be considered for competitive campus fellowships or government fellowships that require formal admissions (ex: Taiwan Ministry of Education) must apply to the traditional process due early December. All other current CEE MS students are eligible to apply by March 1st through an internal link sent annually by AAO. If admitted, students will join the upcoming Fall cohort. Students on visas should consult with BIO on documentation needed to transition degree goals. Student graduating in Spring will return to student status in Fall and are not eligible to work on campus in the summer. · source
