In their first year in the CS program, PhD students take courses in Ithaca and initiate research with faculty within the CS department in Ithaca and/or at Cornell Tech. Those who choose to work with advisors at Cornell Tech generally then relocate to New York City. PhD students at Cornell Tech can engage Ithaca faculty on their committees and are welcome to spend time in Ithaca as appropriate for their research. Currently, most Cornell Tech students spend at least their first two semesters in Ithaca to fulfill their course requirements.

The Operations, Technology, and Information Management (OTIM) PhD at Cornell Tech is the same program as in the SC Johnson College of Business in Ithaca. OTIM PhD students are advised by a business field member . The OTIM degree requirements in Ithaca and at Cornell Tech are the same. Students interested in a PhD in OTIM at Cornell Tech should therefore apply to the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University. The application process is described here and does not distinguish between the campuses. In their first year in the OR program, PhD students take courses in Ithaca and initiate research with faculty within the School of Operations Research and Information Engineering in Ithaca and/or at Cornell Tech. Those who choose to work with advisors at Cornell Tech then relocate to New York City. Depending on the arrangements with the advisor and the requirements of the specific research path chosen by the student, the amount of time spent in Ithaca can extend into the second year of the PhD program.
