Ishtiaque Ahmed

Syed Ishtiaque Ahmed is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Toronto and Associate Director of the Knowledge Media Design Institute. His research focuses on human-computer interaction, ICTD, computing for marginalized communities, critical computing, social justice, and sustainability. He leads the Third Space research group and co-organizes the Critical Computing Seminar. Ahmed is affiliated with multiple departments and institutes at the University of Toronto, including the iSchool, Data Sciences Institute, School of Environment, School of Cities, Institute of Health Emergencies and Pandemics, and Schwartz Reisman Institute for Technology and Society. He also serves on the Research Ethics Board and AI Task Force at UofT.

Syed Ishtiaque Ahmed is a researcher focused on AI Policy, AI Safety, AI Governance, and Human-Centered AI. His work explores the intersection of technology, society, and policy, particularly in the Global South. Ahmed's research includes studies on digital privacy, algorithmic decision-making, and the socio-technical challenges faced by marginalized communities. He has examined issues such as online sexual harassment, biometric surveillance, and the role of family in women's technological inclusion. His publications highlight the importance of designing inclusive and ethical technologies that address real-world challenges while considering cultural and social contexts.
