Mauricio Dziedzic is a Professor of Engineering at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), specializing in water resources, hydraulic engineering, dam safety, and environmental sustainability. His current research focuses on dam-break modelling, risk assessment, and the environmental, social, and economic consequences of dam failures, building on earlier work in water quality and environmental modelling, sustainability assessment, and hydraulic engineering. From 2021 to 2026, he served as Chair of UNBC’s School of Engineering. During his five-year term, he led the consolidation and development of UNBC’s engineering programs, including the first accreditation and external review processes for its undergraduate engineering programs and the development of new graduate programs. He led the launch of the Master of Applied Science in Engineering, contributed to the development of the PhD in Engineering and course-based Master of Engineering programs, established the School’s Industry Advisory Board, expanded engineering outreach and recruitment initiatives, and introduced the UNBC High School Design Competition. He also redesigned the undergraduate capstone experience and mentored capstone students, with UNBC teams subsequently earning second- and fourth-place finishes in the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering national capstone design competition. His academic leadership experience spans more than 25 years in Canada and Brazil and includes the design or major redesign, implementation, consolidation, and authorization and/or accreditation of three undergraduate and four graduate programs. Before joining UNBC, he chaired the Civil Engineering program at Universidade Positivo for six years and its Graduate Program in Environmental Management for 15.5 years. He has also conducted institutional and program assessments for the Brazilian Ministry of Education and accreditation visits for Engineers Canada. Dziedzic has supervised more than 100 undergraduate and graduate trainees and postdoctoral fellows and has secured more than CAD $2 million in research grants, contracts, and equipment funding over his career. His teaching and research are closely connected to engineering practice, with particular emphasis on preparing students to address complex problems involving water, infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and public safety.
