Regular biography
Professor J. Stewart Aitchison is a Professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on the development of micro and nano-scale devices for optical signal processing and sensing applications. He joined the University of Toronto in 2001 as the Nortel chair in Emerging Technology. His work includes the development of novel optical biosensors, waveguide lasers, and photosensitive direct writing processes based on Flame Hydrolysis Deposited (FHD) silica. He has also been involved in the development of a portable HIV monitoring system through his co-founded company ChipCare Corporation. Additionally, he has held leadership roles in research initiatives at the University of Toronto, including the Emerging Communications Technology Institute.
