Joanie Crandall, BA (Ottawa), BEd (Queen’s), MA (Toronto), PhD (Saskatchewan), is Assistant Professor at the University of Northern British Columbia. She grew up in New Brunswick on the unceded traditional territory of the Wolastoqey. She came to be passionate about decolonizing education after experiencing the privilege of living, learning, and working with Indigenous communities. She lived on the traditional territory of the Inuit as a principal and on the traditional territories of the Gwich’in and Inuvialuit as an instructional coach. She also has experience in educational media, instructional design, as a college director, a multi-disciplinary research centre coordinator, university lecturer, and consultant. In her travels, she has met wonderful language teachers who have shared Nêhiyawêwin, Inuktitut, Inuvialuktun, and Gwich’in language in person; and Wolastoqey, Anishininiimowin, Dënesųłiné, Tłı̨chǫ, Mi’kmaq, Anishinaabemowin, Saulteaux, Michif, Dakelh, Kanien’kéha, Onödowá'ga:', Skarò·rə̨ˀ, Onʌyoteˀa·, and Ktunaxa languages online. Her research interests are centred in decolonizing education through context-responsive, culturally relevant, interdisciplinary, social justice approaches.
