I am an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the University of Northern British Columbia. I hold a PhD and an MSW from McGill University, an MSc in Geography from Western University, and a BEd from the University of Malawi. My interdisciplinary scholarship brings together critical, community-engaged and green social work, with particular attention to critical social policy, Africentric and decolonial practice, refugee governance and forced migration, Indigenous child and family welfare, and northern, rural and remote social work. My research examines how law, policy, colonialism, racism, environmental change and institutional systems shape health, livelihoods, rights and resilience. My current work includes refugee protection and the right to work in Uganda and Malawi; Indigenous child welfare and water governance in northern British Columbia; anti-Black racism and community development; food and nutrition security; maternal and child health; and social work education and field education. I use qualitative, mixed-methods, participatory, critical policy analysis and community-based research approaches. I work collaboratively with Indigenous Nations, refugee-led and community organizations, social service agencies, universities and public institutions in Canada and Africa. My teaching and mentorship are grounded in social justice, environmental justice, human rights, cultural responsiveness and the preparation of social workers for ethical practice in diverse rural, remote and international contexts.
