Daniel Akira Stadnicki

Daniel feels very lucky to direct the MacEwan Youth and University Percussion Ensembles, teach Percussion Techniques to education majors, private lessons (drum kit and hand percussion), as well as introductory courses in Musicology. As a scholar, he loves diving into complex topics that try to unpack the relationships between musical performance, education and inter-cultural exchange. Daniel’s own work has often focused on the drum kit, including projects on J Dilla, gospel church drumming, the drum circle industry, as well as tangents in Swedish folk, Americana and Persian classical music. This is because his research is a direct reflection of his own artistic practice. He really enjoys teaching and supervising popular music ensembles and firmly believes that contemporary music genres require diverse sets of professional skills and performance techniques. Daniel’s dream ensembles to supervise would be: Live Instrumental Hip Hop, Afro-Beat, Free Improvisation, and a Tiny Desk ‘Acoustic’ Ensemble. | Drum kit, world music, percussion, folk music, roots music, ethnomusicology, EDI, community music, facilitation, anthropology, cultural studies.
