Constanza Pacher

Constanza Pacher's research activity resides in two areas: scholarship of teaching and learning and applied research and inquiry through creative activity. The latter finds her designing books to stay up-to-date within her field of print design. Constanza Pacher has been writing curriculum and reflecting on her teaching practice and experiences in the classroom for more than fifteen years. She is currently working on a research study that looks at experiential learning as a strategy to promote student engagement, acceptance of learning goals, self-motivation and overall well-being. She also investigates the use of experimental typography as a teaching strategy. The practical application of her research finds its way back to her classroom in the form of projects that are alive, up-to-date and as close to the real world as possible. An example of this is two collaborative, experiential learning projects for Typography II, which reaches 50-80 students each year. These two projects connect the design students, the program and the department to other programs in the university while bringing along renowned musicians and writers from across Canada to two exciting months of learning, hard work, creativity, and celebration. 1) With the Bent River Records & Bachelor of Design Album Design Competition (2018), students work alongside the departments of Music and Arts & Cultural Management. This project includes working with the music label, artists’ interviews, formal final presentations of concepts and selecting a winner for commercial production and distribution, enabling students to learn through first-hand experience, make connections with the real world and gain valuable skills for the future. 2) The MacEwan Book of the Year Design Project (2014) gives students the opportunity to work with a renowned piece of Canadian literature (chosen annually by the university) and meet with the authors to present the outcomes.
