Regular biography
Yasumaru Yoshio was a professor emeritus in social history at Hitotsubashi University, known for his pioneering work in Japanese historical studies. His research focused on the history of Japanese popular thought, popular movements, and popular religion during Japan's transition to modernity. He authored nine books, including 'Japan’s modernization and popular thought,' which is regarded as a seminal study of Japanese popular intellectual history. Born in 1934, he joined Kyoto University in 1953 and later taught at Meijo University and Hitotsubashi University, where he retired in 1998. He also served as a visiting professor at Waseda University from 1997 to 2005. His contributions to the fields of intellectual history and Japanese social history have left a lasting impact on academic scholarship.
