Michel Vié was a French historian and Japanese scholar, born on 31 August 1929, and passed away on 7 January 2026. He was a professor emeritus at INALCO, where he taught the history of modern Japan until 1995. His academic career included positions at the Maison franco-japonaise, the University of Kyūshū, and the University of Hong Kong, where he conducted research and authored works such as 'Histoire du Japon en 1969' and 'Le Japon contemporain en 1971'. His research focused on Japanese history, particularly the Meiji period, and the interplay of political, military, and economic forces in Japan's development.
