Ronald Kluger's research focuses on reaction mechanisms, biomimetic chemistry, and enzymes, with an emphasis on understanding catalytic processes in biological systems. His work explores the mechanisms of nucleophilic substitution in phosphate esters, thiamin diphosphate-mediated decarboxylation, and the role of electrostatic stabilization in enzyme-catalyzed reactions. Kluger investigates how enzymes generate reactive intermediates and how these can be modeled using chemical cross-linking and protein–protein interactions. His studies also examine pH-rate profiles, allosteric intermediates, and the reactivity of covalent enzymatic intermediates. Kluger's research contributes to the development of pharmaceutical compositions and the design of red cell substitutes from hemoglobin.
