Andrew Woolley is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Toronto, specializing in chemical biology. His research focuses on the development and application of azobenzene-based photoswitches for controlling biomolecular structures and functions. His work explores the use of light to modulate peptide conformations, ion channel activity, and protein interactions in both in vitro and in vivo settings. Woolley's research has led to the creation of red and near-infrared photoswitches suitable for biological applications, enabling non-invasive optical control of cellular processes. His studies also include the investigation of azobenzene derivatives for use in fluorescence imaging and the photocontrol of coiled-coil proteins in living cells.
