Gary Muscatello

Gary Muscatello is an Associate Professor in the Department of BIO at The University of Sydney. His research interests include veterinary sciences, veterinary anatomy and physiology, veterinary diagnosis and diagnostics, veterinary virology, animal behaviour, animal cell and molecular biology, veterinary bacteriology, and veterinary medicine. His work focuses on understanding the ecology of animal diseases, particularly infectious diseases of horses, with an emphasis on the interaction between microbes and the animal and environment. Gary has contributed to improved understanding of disease management and diagnosis, and has co-authored 40 peer-reviewed scientific publications and a book chapter. He is also a frequent chair and presenter at relevant conferences.

Gary Muscatello is a Senior Lecturer in Veterinary Microbiology and ONE Health at the University of Sydney, specializing in microbiology, epidemiology, and veterinary science. His research focuses on Rhodococcus equi, a significant pathogen in foals, and its epidemiology, pathogenesis, and immune response. He investigates the ecology and transmission of R. equi in equine populations, as well as the role of Campylobacter and Salmonella in zoonotic disease. His work also explores the impact of transportation on horse health, including stress responses and oxidative stress biomarkers. Muscatello's research contributes to understanding and managing infectious diseases in veterinary medicine and public health.
