Andrew Merchant
Regular biography
Andrew Merchant is a Professor at The University of Sydney, Department of BIO. His research interests include plant physiology, agro-ecosystem function and prediction, plant biology, plant biochemistry, freshwater ecology, crop and pasture biomass and bioproducts, crop and pasture biochemistry and physiology, crop and pasture production, plant cell and molecular biology, and crop and pasture improvement. He completed his PhD thesis at the University of Melbourne in 2005, investigating the chemical and physiological adaptation of Eucalyptus species to environmental change. From 2006 to 2008, he worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the University of New South Wales, developing phloem-derived diagnostic tools for plant health. In 2007, he was awarded a Federal Innovation Award for his work on cyclic sugar alcohols and their role in mitigating stressful conditions in trees and crops. He was appointed as a Lecturer in Agro-ecosystems at the University of Sydney in September 2008 and completed an Australian Research Council (ARC) Postdoctoral Fellowship (2009-2013) developing metabolite and isotopic profiling techniques for the assessment of plant health and productivity. Dr Merchant was awarded an ARC Future Fellowship in 2013 to improve our understanding of plant energetics and resource balance using a range of chemical and molecular tools.
