Regular biography
Robert G. Bergman is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley, affiliated with the Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on organic and inorganic chemistry, particularly the synthesis and reaction mechanisms of new compounds, with applications in homogeneous catalysis, supramolecular chemistry, and organic synthesis. Bergman has contributed significantly to the study of reactive organometallic intermediates and their role in C-H bond activation. He has also explored catalytic carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions and metal-mediated oxidation and amination processes. In addition to his research, Bergman teaches the first-year graduate course in physical organic chemistry and is involved in educational outreach programs such as the Bay Area Scientists in Schools (BASIS) initiative.
