Sebastian Maerkl

Sebastian Maerkl is an Associate Professor in the BIO department at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. His research interests include microfluidics, cell-free synthetic biology, transcription factor biophysics, and molecular diagnostics. Prof. Maerkl received B.S. degrees in Biology and Chemistry from Fairleigh-Dickinson University and a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from California Institute of Technology. He joined EPFL in 2008 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2015. His lab focuses on the intersection of micro-engineering, systems biology, synthetic biology, and molecular diagnostics. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed publications and holds six patents. Prof. Maerkl also founded the EPFL iGEM team in 2008 and has been involved in its activities until 2020.

Sebastian J. Maerkl is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Bioengineering, EPFL, specializing in Microfluidics, Synthetic Biology, Cell-Free Synthetic Biology, and Diagnostics. His research focuses on developing microfluidic technologies for large-scale integration, diagnostics, and the study of molecular interactions. He has published extensively on microfluidic systems for cancer diagnostics, cell-free genetic circuits, and the design of synthetic biological networks. His work includes the development of microfluidic devices for automated biology and the implementation of cell-free biological networks at steady state. Maerkl's research also explores the use of microfluidics in measuring transcription factor-DNA binding specificities and constructing complex biomolecular systems.
