Pierre Gönczy

Pierre Gönczy is a Full Professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), affiliated with the School of Life Sciences. His research focuses on cell division, polarity, asymmetric division, microtubules, centrioles, and SAS-6, with a particular emphasis on C. elegans. He obtained his PhD from The Rockefeller University in 1995 and joined the laboratory of Tony Hyman at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) as a postdoctoral fellow in 1996. He established his own laboratory at ISREC in 2000 and was promoted to Full Professor at EPFL in 2009. His teaching includes courses on cell and developmental biology for engineers and life sciences engineering.

His research explores the molecular mechanisms underlying asymmetric cell division and spindle positioning, particularly in model organisms such as Caenorhabditis elegans and Drosophila melanogaster. His studies also address the role of cytoplasmic dynein in mitochondrial positioning and centrosome separation. Through functional genomic approaches, including RNAi screening, he has contributed significantly to understanding the genetic and molecular basis of early embryogenesis and spermatogenesis.
