Douglas Hanahan

Douglas Hanahan is a Professor Emeritus at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), affiliated with the BIO department. He holds the Merck Serono Chair in Oncology and is associated with the Hanahan Lab. His research interests include cancer, translational oncology, genetically engineered mouse models of human cancer, tumor microenvironment, angiogenesis, invasion, metastasis, and pre-clinical trials. Hanahan has a long-standing academic career, including positions at MIT, Harvard, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and UCSF. He has been recognized with numerous honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, the US National Academy of Science, and EMBO. He also received an honorary degree from the University of Dundee in 2011.

Douglas Hanahan is a cancer researcher whose work focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying cancer progression. His research explores the hallmarks of cancer, including angiogenesis, tumor microenvironment interactions, and resistance to anti-angiogenic therapies. Hanahan's studies have examined the role of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in carcinogenesis and the contribution of cancer-associated fibroblasts to tumor-promoting inflammation. His work also investigates the transformation of normal cells into malignant ones and the subtypes of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. His research has significantly advanced the understanding of how tumors evade therapeutic interventions and how the tumor microenvironment supports malignant progression.
